The UN-REDD Vietnam Programme started in 2009 with the aim to assist Vietnam becoming REDD ready and able to contribute to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation nationally and in the Mekong region. Efforts under the Programme are widely influenced by outcomes under the international climate change negotiations led by UNFCCC. The Cancun Agreement from COP 16 in 2010 presented a list of safeguards that any country involved in REDD action should comply with. Furthermore, the text clarifies that countries should start the development of “national systems providing relevant information on how safeguards are promoted, addressed and respected.”
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) works to help build the public health system’s capacity to address the HIV epidemic in Vietnam. They work in particular to strengthen care and treatment programs, improve the laboratory system, and address prevention of transmission from HIV-infected mothers to their children (PMTCT). CHAI seeks to hire a full-time Counselor to improve the capacity of health workers to provide counseling services to children and adults before and during the HIV testing and care and treatment services. The Counselor will report to the Program Coordinator.
