ORGANIZATION PROFILE

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 6 million children by constructing more than 1,600 schools, establishing over 15,000 libraries, publishing 800 new children’s book titles in 11 local languages, and rewarding over 20,000 girls with long-term, holistic scholarships.

Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$43.7 million and our global staff numbers over 500. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have an Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi and program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane.

Overall Position Overview

Literacy Program Associate’s overall responsibility is to support the Literacy Instruction Program with tasks as assigned in collaboration with the Literacy Program Officer. This position will be responsible for the general implementation of program activities including teacher training, resource development, school visits and meetings with provincial partners. Responsibilities will also include support to international/national consultants with daily tasks and communication with Literacy Facilitators on program monitoring and support to teachers at schools.

Duties & Responsibilities:

•    Assist with overall coordination with provincial partners for meetings, teacher trainings, field visits of Literacy Team COROGO and donors
•    Assist with preparations of programs, handouts and models of teaching and learning aids, stationary and logistics for trainings for teachers in the province
•    Assist with preparations of trainings for literacy facilitators and monitoring of their support visits to schools on the monthly basis
•    Assist with design of resource book for teachers and work book for children including the printing and distribution of the resources to schools
•    Assist with preparations of activities for Literacy events/activities with communities in collaboration with the Reading Room and Local Language Publication Programs
•    Be responsible for the filing of data/information of reports on school visits that are developed by Literacy Facilitators
•    Be responsible to inform the Literacy Program Officer on any issues that are reflected in field reports by Literacy Facilitators for immediate support or actions if necessary
•    Complete any tasks for the Literacy Instruction Program following recommendation or suggestion given by the Literacy Program Officer
•    Participate in other activities, meetings or workshops as recommended by the line manager

Qualifications

Required
•    University degree in education, social development, or another related field
•    Minimum of 1 or 2 years of working experience with an INGO, international donors on education projects, or programs
•    Basic knowledge and understanding of the current primary curriculum and education policies of the Ministry of Education and Training
•    Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Vietnamese
•    Ability to travel frequently to provinces
•    Good computer competency, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and any graphics software

Preferred
•    Experience in training teachers and resource development for primary teachers and children
•    Experience in working with locals/communities with development projects/programs
•    Experience in monitoring activities with INGOs
