The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (www.ciat.cgiar.org) develops technologies, innovative methods, and research-based based solutions in agriculture and the environment, in order to increase prosperity and improve human nutrition in the tropics, and by doing so, help the world secure a sustainable food future. Headquartered in Cali, Colombia, CIAT conducts research for development in tropical regions of Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. CIAT is a member of the CGIAR Consortium (www.cgiar.org), a global research partnership for a food secure future. The Center’s research focuses on increasing productivity of key crops (cassava, common bean, rice, and tropical forages), developing sustainable agroecosystems and landscapes, and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate resilience and inclusive markets.

CIAT’s Asia regional program is led from Hanoi, Vietnam and employs approximately 80 staff and visiting researchers of more than 20 nationalities.

The Position

The GIS & Data Analyst will join a diverse team working on research for development projects aimed at supporting smallholder farmers in Asia. Sample projects include mapping exposure to risk such as climate change and deforestation, as well as analyzing diverse socio-economic and spatial datasets to enable development of recommended responses using climate information services, agricultural advisories and value chain approaches. An early career researcher or recent graduate with motivation to expand their skills and professional horizons will thrive in this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide GIS analysis and reporting support to Climate Resilient Agriculture team together with researchers working on agro-climatology, crop models, big data and economics approaches.
  • For large datasets, support data implementation of data management protocols (i.e. storage, access), preprocessing and statistical analysis.
  • Provide assistance in presentation of results including graphical representation and visualization of data and contribute to scientific article publications.
  • Participate in relevant team activities such as project planning meetings, results-sharing workshop, proposal development, among others.
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of research and information databases.
  • Conduct literature review to identify key metrics as needed relating to agriculture and socio-economics as relevant to the projects

Required and Desired Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS) analysis required. Additional experience in data analysis (geospatial statistics), with programming skills is preferred.
  • B.S degree in Geography, Remote Sensing, Statistics, Biometrics or similar field with a strong background in statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of updated GIS methods and approaches, especially with regard to agriculture and/environmental topics.
  • Skilled in handling data, including large and complex geospatial data sets.
  • Excellent English communication skills (speaking and writing).
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and follow through on deadlines.
  • The desire to learn and acquire new skills.

Terms of Employment

The position is under the Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) category and limited to applicants with Vietnamese nationality. Contracts are issued and renewed annually, based on performance and availability of resources, including an initial three-month probation period.
