Forest Management Specialist

Winrock International, an international not for profit organization, is seeking applications for the positions of Forest Management Specialist for a multi-year USAID-funded Program named Vietnam Forests and Deltas which aims to strengthen the foundations for, and community-based practice of, climate change mitigation and adaptation in the forest and delta landscapes in Vietnam.

Responsibilities:

- The Forest Management Specialist will be responsible for the provision of technical input to the projects sustainable landscape activities under the mitigation component of the project. In particular, the specialist will provide input on REDD+, forest management strategies, engagement with communities and provincial partners, forest inventory and carbon assessments, and implementing sustainable forest management and conservation in the target landscapes.
- Supervise all technical activities related to REDD pilots projects, including implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and timely preparation and submission of reports and other deliverables.
- Provide technical support for a range of REDD+ mitigation activities with a focus on sustainable forest management activities, including biodiversity conservation, forest protection, production forest management and community forestry;
- Provide support to build technical capacity in-country. Work in close collaboration with other Technical Advisors, Government counterpart staff and other project staff.
- Assess and measure the changes in GHG avoided emissions and removals as a result of the project interventions, with an emphasis on the use of remote sensing and GIS capability to measure and monitor change; guide forest carbon plot measurements.
- Assist with PDD development, verification and validation of the project.
- To provide technical advice and input to the projects work on development of mechanisms for benefit distribution mechanisms.
- Design and provide training as necessary to partners, beneficiaries, and counterparts.
- Liaise with provincial-level and national-level government agencies, in particular the Vietnam REDD Office.
- Work closely with M&E specialist to  develop tools for monitoring, reporting and verification systems for the field intervention sites.

Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in Forestry, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or other relevant topic
- Minimum of ten years of relevant technical experience in forestry, carbon accounting, climate change, REDD, and natural resource management projects in Vietnam, candidate should have experience of afforestation, conservation, protection and production forest management activities;
- Technical skills on REDD+ and monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) using approved carbon accounting methods is preferred.
- Previous experience with donor-funded projects  is desired
- Demonstrated and proven record to work in a multidisciplinary team under changeable and complex circumstances.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills (English and Vietnamese)
- Understanding of REDD and land cover/land use change and forestry practices in Vietnam.  Strong technical skills in forest carbon. Knowledge and understanding of REDD+, national and local level REDD+ activities in-country, and improved forest management practices.
- Technical skills in forest inventory, carbon assessment, forest management strategies.
- Strong organizational skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
- Fluency in English
