Field Assistant to Team Leader for UNDP-MARD research project.

UNDP consultant seeking a Vietnamese national to work as Field Assistant to the Team Leader of a UNDP-MARD (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) research project - 'Research and policy dialogue on climate change, migration and resettlement in Viet Nam'.  The Field Assistant will work along side the Team Leader in Dong Thap, Long An, Can Tho City, and Ho Chi Minh City during field work, and otherwise work from home.  The objectives of the project are as follows:

General objective
To draw out the main lessons on migration and resettlement for Viet Nam in relation to past and present climatic stresses, and recommend migration and resettlement policy directions to strengthen resilience in both sending and receiving areas and population groups that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change according to different but realistic climate change and adaptation policy and investment scenarios for the coming years and decades.

Specific objectives
- Investigate current legal frameworks in Viet Nam on spontaneous internal migration and resettlement from areas vulnerable to environmental stress at the national, provincial, and local levels, to the extent in which they affect populations living in areas of environmental stress, as well as migrants originating from these areas.
- Examine household migration strategies in response to environmental stress, and how the legal frameworks exert influence household migration strategies in response to environmental stress, if at all, and how they strengthen or weaken resilience.
- Identify measures needed to enhance policies at the national, provincial, and local levels to afford greater protection to and strengthen the resilience of communities living in areas of environmental change, improve resettlement programs, and minimize barriers for domestic migration.

Summary:
The Field Assistant role reports directly to the Team Leader.  The responsibilities listed below are inclusive, but not exhaustive, of the role. 

Qualifications & Requirements:
- University degree
- Excellent written and verbal English
- Experience with Vietnamese – English interpretation
- Experience conducting in-depth interviews (IDI) at the household level
- Experience conducting focus group discussions (FGD) (preferred)
- Ability to work in remote villages and put people at ease when interviewing them
- Experience working in the Mekong Delta
- Flexible and positive attitude
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Ability to work long hours and deliver under tight time constraints
- Willingness to work during weekends

Key Responsibilities:
- Act as interpreter during all IDIs and FGDs, meetings with local authorities, and during any supervision duties of other study team members
- Translate IDI and FGD transcripts, some open-ended questions in the questionnaire, and other secondary documents relevant to the research
- Assist with logistical planning and other duties as necessary

Duration:
Initial full-time contract for 2 months, with possibility for extension.

Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  All travel costs will be covered and long term per diem provided for every day of travel.
