In 2017 Animals Asia signed an agreement with the Vietnamese Government to bring bear bile farming to an end. During the implementation of this project, we have been expanding our capacity-building and career development opportunities for the Vietnamese staff.

This is your chance to join the bear management team and help to make the world a kinder place for animals.

You will be based at our Bach Ma Bear Rescue Centre, in Bach Ma National Park.

You are highly motivated, experienced in animal care and staff development, and empathetic. You are passionate about animal welfare
and people. You have highly developed interpersonal skills, and get deep satisfaction and fulfilment from providing vocational training to other people in animal care and welfare. You are ok with stepping back and letting others shine, and you know how to lead from behind.

Responsibilities

  • Capacity building and training Vietnamese members of staff.
  • Co-coordinating various daily operations at the sanctuary:
  1. Animal care and management;
  2. Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
  3. Ordering stock as required;
  4. Maintaining bear behaviour records & databases.
  • Monitoring bear behaviour and adjusting management strategies accordingly - for example:
  1. Looking for signs of hunger and adjusting diets
  2. Identify positive, neutral and negative interactions between bears and plan for integrations
  3. Plan and carry-out first time enclosure access
  • Participate in, and plan for, bear rescues
  • Report writing, including producing material used by the communications team for social media and the Animals Asia website.
  • Human resources:
  1. Staff appraisals;
  2. Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff;
  3. Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Sanctuary Manager;

Requirements

  • A university degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal welfare, animal behaviour or related field..
  • At least five years of hands on experience in husbandry/behavioural management in a captive wild animal facility or similar. Kindly note: this position will not suit applicants who have worked only in a veterinary capacity.
  • As this position will work in a team comprising staff from multiple cultures, self-awareness, empathy and patience are essential.
  • Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise tasks.
  • Computer literacy, including Excel. Experience with Slack or Airtable is a plus.
  • Strong people management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Fluent in English.
  • A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team.
  • Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with weekend or afterhours work applicable.
