The Flying Eye Hospital (FEH) conducted its first program in Hanoi City between 25 May and 6 June 2015. This was the seventh FEH visit to Vietnam that followed a program in Hue City. National institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) hosted the two-week program that was sponsored by FedEx. The project aimed at to complimenting Orbis Vietnam’s initiative in improving pediatric eye care and diabetic retinopathy services in Vietnam.

The project trained 211 eye care professionals, including 108 doctors and 103 allied ophthalmic personnel. Twenty ophthalmologists had hands-on training in pediatric ophthalmology (strabismus, glaucoma, oculoplastics), orthoptics as well as corneal, uveitis and vitreo-retinal diseases. A contingent of to 13 volunteer faculty served in a program where both trainees and mentors avidly used CyberSight as a key prescreening tool. Participation to lectures and live video sessions on board the FEH classroom was excellent and overwhelming at times. Packs of enthusiastic observers followed mentors at screening clinics, workshops and took turns to get a good view of the action in the operating rooms. Both ophthalmology and nursing symposia attracted a huge audience of 75 attended each. Ten nurses, two anesthesia nurses and two anesthesiologists improved their skills through hands-on trainings in the operating theatre. Seventeen engineers and technicians participated in the biomedical workshops. Overall, 196 people were examined and 87 treatment procedures could be performed. Children accounted for 26 of the 55 surgical beneficiaries. The vice minister of Health of Vietnam and the US ambassador to Vietnam were among the 130 government officials, dignitaries, sponsors, partners, and media people who attended the opening ceremony or visited the FEH. Several million people across Vietnam could have received eye health education messages conveyed by dozens of media spots produced on the program.
