About the position

The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT seeks to recruit a research associate for data analysis to support the Food Environment and Consumer Behavior team in Asia in the implementation, and analysis of food environment and diet research. The aim of the research is to identify solutions to combat malnutrition through diversification of the food systems in different Asian countries. This will be done by supporting the FECB team in Asia in the analysis of multiple sources of primary and secondary data to identify food environment indicators and indices associated with food safety and malnutrition in all its forms. The person selected will become part of a regional team working on a diverse portfolio of research and development projects across Asia seeking to better understand people’s food choices, value chains, markets, and food systems in terms of nutrition infrastructure, economic inclusion, women’s empowerment, consumer dietary outcomes, and environmental sustainability.

The candidate should have first experiences in quantitative analysis, data collection methods. The most important qualities of any candidate will be that they are a team player, but at the same time independent, rigorous, passionate, and motivated by the social impact of their work

The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team composed of national and international experts based in Vietnam and in other countries. He/she will coordinate and streamline different data production and storage processes with a view to supporting efficient internal and external data sharing and use.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in relevant activities such as project planning and data analysis meetings;
  • Run quality assurance checks on data;
  • Extract data for analysis;
  • Perform quantitative data analysis of multiple primary and secondary datasets;
  • Support the design and implementation of quantitative data collection;
  • Support the Investigation of statistical methods, tools and approaches within food environment and dietary behavior research;
  • Support in any other related activities as advised by supervisor.

Required qualifications and experience

  • A University, professional, or similar degree in statistics, mathematics, economics or related fields;
  • Knowledge in using mixed methods for data collection and employing diverse analytical tools such as “Stata”, “R”, “Nvivo”, etc.;
  • Skills in data visualization, presentation tools and writing for communicating research results to both academic and non-academic audiences is of advantage;
  • Creative problem-solver who asks good questions and can set up approaches to answer them;
  • Exceptional communication skills both written and oral;
  • Organized self-starter capable of delivering high quality results on time with limited day-to-day oversight;
  • Comfortable working in English.

Desirable

  • Comprehensive knowledge and up-to-date understanding of computing systems, databases, and programming;
  • Knowledge of the development of data management plans, policies, and implementation;
  • Experience on the development of data entry systems for data collection and data management guidelines.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time position based in Hanoi, Vietnam and is available for Vietnamese nationals. The initial contract will be for one (1) year, subject to a probation period of two (2) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources. This is a position at level BG06, on a scale of 14 levels, with level 14 being the highest.
