RECRUITMENT OF A PROJECT OFFICER FOR THE PROJECT ‘INCREASING FRUIT AND VEGETABLE
INTAKE OF LOW-INCOME POPULATIONS IN VIETNAM AND NIGERIA THROUGH FOOD SYSTEM
INNOVATIONS’

Background: Rikolto (formerly VECO/Vredeseilanden) is an international NGO with more than 40 years of experience in partnering farmer organisations and food chain actors across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Rikolto runs programmes in 14 countries worldwide through eight regional offices.

Rikolto in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Regional office of Rikolto, located in Hanoi. Rikolto envisions a world with production and consumption systems that allow poverty and hunger to be eradicated and that do not burden our planet more than it can bear. Therefore, we empower farmer groups to become solid business partners and implement future-proof, sustainable practices. We support them so that their products meet quality standards. We connect them with innovators in the food industry to explore new ways of doing business.

We are currently seeking a qualified professional for the position of Project Officer to work for the project ‘Increasing fruit and vegetable intake of low-income populations in Vietnam and Nigeria through food system innovations’ (FVN project) for the period 2019-2021. This incumbent will be based at Rikolto’s Regional Office in Hanoi, Vietnam with frequent travel to the Project’s target locations.

The project is funded by the UK’s Department of International Development (DFID) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is implemented jointly by Wageningen University, CIAT, IFPRI, Rikolto, Bioversity International, Hanoi Medical University, the National Institute of Nutrition, and the University
of Ibadan (Nigeria).

Position Summary: The Project Officer, under the direct supervision of the Regional Director and Research Advisor, will implement, support, and facilitate the implementation of the FVN project in close collaboration with other Programme officers and partners so as to (i) increase the access of consumers to healthy food; (ii) improve food safety at traditional markets; (iii) benefit smallholder producers; and (iv) improve Hanoi city’s food system management.

Basic Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant domain (i.e. agriculture, sociology, economics, rural development, food systems or equivalent)
  • At least 3 years of experience working on agricultural or food systems research (i.e. value chain development, food safety, nutrition, etc.); Proven experience of working in Vietnam with a variety of stakeholders (i.e. consumers, vendors, government, private sector, etc.)
  • Substantial knowledge and expertise on value chains, food systems, traditional markets, food safety, nutrition, and the food retail sector
  • In-depth understanding of the functioning of agri-food value chains from production to consumption, including chains’ institutional environment, rural communities’ socio-cultural systems, consumers’ behaviours and preferences, and business practices in the chains
  • Experience in implementing problem-focused interventions (including investigating situations, and designing and implementing interventions for development impact)
  • Work experience in the relevant research areas listed above in an international organization is highly desired
  • Ability to work in an international and multicultural team and to structure own work independently
  • Practical mind-set and result oriented
  • Ability to communicate clearly in a variety of settings and styles, with good networking skills, including in an international environment
  • Very good working knowledge of English and Vietnamese, both spoken and written
