Women empowerment in cinnamon value chain in Lao Cai province

Project: “Women’s economic empowerment through agricultural value chain enhancement” (WEAVE)

Location: Bac Ha, Van Ban districts and adjacent areas in Lao Cai province

Time: May 2020

1.    Introduction

Netherlands Development Organiztion (SNV) is a not-for-profit international development organisation. It was established in 1965 in the Netherlands. SNV has established its networks presenting in 45 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Along with gender – responsive market driven approach, SNV is committed to support poverty reduction through promoting environental sustainably solutions for low income people in areas of agriculture, energy, clean water and environmental hygiene, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), women’s economics empowerment…

SNV has been working in Viet nam since 1995, and currently has over 30 national and international staff. SNV is operating from an office based in Hanoi and projects presenting in over 50 provinces and cities nationwide, including the poorest and most isolated ones.

The project entitled “Women’s  Economics Empowerment through Agricultural Value Chain Enhancement” (WEAVE) is implemented by a partnership of SNV and Agriculture Extension and Service Center (AESC) of Lao Cai province, with the funding provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australian government. The project supports ethnic minority women’s economic empowerment in cinnamon value chain by promoting equality between women and men within households and production groups; strengthening production skills and negotiation capability; and working with enterprises and the government via policy dialogues to improve the policy environemnt for supporting the producers.

Thanks to on – the - ground training and mentoring, the project builds capacity for participants on marketing skills, financial literacy, business planning, negotiation, and legal understanding. Crucially, WEAVE’s approach will enable participants to understand and challenge the gender roles and responsibilities that prevent women from fully benefi­ting from their work in the targeted value chains. The cinnamon value chain has been selected for its social, ecological and economic viability in the target communities. The project’s approach is designed to improve production efficiency, creating new connections between producers and other entities in the value chain.

Together with the objective of promoting gender equality between women and men, then women could increase their income from their work in cinnamon value chain, and documenting project images, SNV is seeking a specialized photography professional to deliver a set of documentary photos, subject to the terms and requirements detailed below.

2.    Description of consultancy service

2.1. Objective

The photo set will document various images on daily life and work of women in the project area and the processing and production activities in the cinnamon value chain in Lao Cai province.

This documentary photo series will be used for project communication activities, focusing on agricultural value chain, livelihood models and socio – economic development. This will also be used in upcoming publications and on SNV communication channels.

2.2. Scope of work

  • The consultant will work within a period of 4 days in either May or June 2020 (to be determined) and deliver the final product before June 30, 2020.
  • Working with SNV to discuss and brainstorm the content of the photo series
  • Doing field work in project area and taking photos on women’s roles in cinnamon value chain
  • Processing and editing raw images to build a good set of at least 80 – 100 photos
  • Handing over the final product in 2 formats: raw and high quality
  • SNV will support the consultant in liason and introduction with stakeholders
  • The photo set shall fully comply with SNV photography and communication principles.

2.3. Implementation time

The consultant will hand over the final product before June 30, 2020, including 2 formats of raw and high quality photos, to WEAVE project right after field trip completion.

2.4 Product

  • A set of photos, at least 80 – 100 photos addressing daily life and work of women in project area as well as processing and production activities in cinnamon value chain in Lao Cai province.
  • Handing over the photo series in 2 formats: raw and high quality ones.

2.5 Consultant qualification requirements

  • Extensive experience with photography, especially ethnic minority photographs;
  • Having inspiring and artistic style;
  • Proven experience in making similar sets of photos;
  • Interested in development work, livelihood models and agricultural value chain could be a great advantage.

3. Remuneration

The consultant will receive a lumpsum on working day basis for product delivery (including field work and photo editing), to be paid after completion of the task. This remuneration will depend on the qualification of the consultant and be agreed upon in line with SNV financial regulations. The contract will be addressed once with total budget for photo taking and editing.
