Project Objective

Social Impact (SI) is implementing the USAID/Vietnam Learns Contract. The scope of the five-year project is to support USAID/Vietnam staff and its implementing partners to implement more efficient, effective, and sustainable programs by (1) improving staff knowledge and skills in Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) and Collaborating, Learning & Adapting (CLA); (2) advancing evidence-informed decision-making; (3) strengthening strategic collaboration between staff and local stakeholders. 

Please note: This position will be hired by Social Impact and the YP will be seconded to USAID Vietnam.

About USAID’s Diversity, Development and Diplomacy Professional Development Program

USAID Diversity, Development and Diplomacy Professional Development Program (USAID DDD) is a recruitment initiative for talented university students to develop skills and professional capacity. Young Professionals (YPs) joining the program will have the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills related to programming international development activities; developing program budgets for international donors such as USAID; and providing technical assistance to implementing partners, civil society, Government of Vietnam officials, and other donors. YPs in the USAID DDD will be given the opportunity to:

  • Work in a professional, creative, and agile environment focused on making positive change in Vietnam.
  • Experience a range of training and professional development opportunities and exposure to new tools and techniques.
  • Build a marketable skillset through substantive technical work.
  • Gain insights on project management.

The USAID DDD lasts for 03 months, and YPs receive a stipend of VND 11,600,000 per month.

Position Description  

SI seeks to hire a full-time Conservation and Accessibility YP to support the Biodiversity Conservation and Disabilities teams, starting in June 2024. This position will report to the Office Director or their designee.

Selection Criteria

  • Current Vietnamese University student in year 3 or later pursuing a degree in Law, Social Work, Public Policy, Environmental, or Biological Sciences.
  • Ability to travel within Vietnam
  • Critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong willingness to learn
  • Pro-active with ability to work independently
  • Strong Vietnamese reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following: rural development, conservation, working with vulnerable populations including persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to conduct detailed analyses, assessments and/or surveys.
  • Experience in using MS Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Suite Applications, is a plus.

Conservation and Accessibility YP will be expected to:

Design an Accessibility Assessment and complete this assessment for at least one Protected Area(s) within USAID’s Biodiversity Conservation Activity. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Understanding barriers to inclusion for persons with disabilities and the basic rights of persons with disabilities under applicable Vietnamese and International law.
  • Understanding the USAID’s Biodiversity Conservation Activities
  • Designing a comprehensive Assessment procedure for Protected Areas that assesses a protected area’s general accessibility for persons with disabilities - this could include accessibility of physical structures (shuttles, toilets, paths, trails, restaurants and lodging), delivery of information (signate, pamphlets, videos), community outreach practices and employment policies.
  • Undertake trips with USAID team members to protected area(s) under assessment
  • Assessment of the protected area and drafting a report of  results
  • Complete final assessment report with recommendations on how to improve accessibility and support greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in the local community as stakeholders in and beneficiaries of the Protected Area.
  • Present results to USAID, implementing partners and possibly others
  • Work with implementing partners from USAID’s biodiversity and disabilities teams in designing (and potentially implementing) discrete initiatives proposed under the assessment report.

Assist the execution of the Biodiversity Conservation and Disabilities teams’ tasks, which possibly include but are not limited to:

  • Provide logistical and organizing support for events the teams either leads or support
  • Other administrative tasks, as required.

By the end of the assignment, Conservation and Accessibility YP will:

  • Complete an Accessibility Assessment for at least one Protected Area within USAID’s benefitting protected areas under the Biodiversity Conservation Activity
  • Become conversant about development approaches to biodiversity conservation and accessibility.
  • Develop a general understanding of the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility, and disability rights in particular
  • Initiate discrete initiatives building accessibility to selected national protected area sites.
