Background

Vysnova Partners Inc. (Vysnova) requires operational and technical support for malaria research in Vietnam. In collaborationm with host country government infectious disease research bodies and local nongovernmental organizations,  Vysnova supports research prevention and treatment methods as well as the prevalence of malaria in highly-vulnerable populations. At this time most of the activities are focused on malaria. Resistance to Artemisinin®, the world's most effective anti-malarial drug is now widespread across Southeast Asia and seriously threatens global malaria control and elimination.

Scope of Work

In close coordination with the Lead Researcher and Vysnova staff in Singapore and Washington, DC, the Research Operations Manager (ROM) will support the implementation of the research agenda by providing operational guidance and oversight. This position is responsible for developing Project Management Plans for research activities, helping negotiate agreements with partners and consultants, and overall monitoring and coordinating of research activities emanating from the Vysnova team located at the National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology, and Entomology (NIMPE) in Hanoi.

Specific activities

The ROM will provide services for the design, execution, and analysis phases of research projects.

Design

  • Participate in developing protocols and implementation plans for field operations for activities including., recruiting, tracking, and following up with participants; plan timelines and identify necessary resource allocations to facilitate timeline completion.
  • Advise on efficient and effective means of data collection, necessary local partners, possible concerns in recruiting and enrolling study participants, review operational needs of studies (staff, research supplies, travel, other direct costs) and ensure all study designs, protocols, and work plans account for them.
  • Ensure all parties planning to carry out a study have all necessary information and understand the objective of the study.

Execution

  • Ensure that no study begins until the institutional review board has approved the protocol.
  • Design and create training materials for study staff with input from researchers and scientists.
  • Supervise field staff as needed and/or perform quality control of fieldwork.
  • Monitor all field activities, including recruitment, quality assurance/control, and close-out.
  • Communicate regularly with study partners.
  • Coordinate contractual negotiations with partners and the Vysnova home office for subcontracts and memorandums of understanding as well as statements of work and terms of reference.
  • Identify needs for consultancies with the Lead Researcher and work to develop job descriptions and fill the position in coordination with the Vysnova home office.

Analysis

  • Ensure that researchers and analysts have the data and tools they need for analysis.
  • Troubleshoot missing or inadequate data collection with the partners and Lead Researcher.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant scientific research discipline or 5-7 years of experience managing scientific research projects.
  • Experience coordinating operations for hard science research studies related to infectious disease, preferably malaria or other mosquito-borne diseases.
  • Experience working with MOH agencies in Vietnam, preferably with NIMPE.
  • Fluency in Vietnamese and proficiency in English.
  • Experience managing staff of all levels and partner organizations.
