Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region plans to build 30 wastewater treatment plants from now through 2020, in line with an overall planning recently approved by the prime minister, the Dat Viet newspaper reported Nov 23. Under the planning on water drainage for major economic zones in the region by 2020, 13 plants for domestic wastewater treatment and 17 ones for industrial wastewater treatment will be built in Can Tho, An Giang, Kien Giang and Ca Mau. These facilities will be capable of daily treating 188,000 cu.m of household wastewater for urban areas and 239,720 cu.m of industrial wastewater for industrial parks. The region’s urban areas are forecast to discharge 280,900 cu.m of wastewater daily in 2015 and 356,600 in 2020 per day while in the next decade, total daily volume of dumped industrial wastewater is predicted at 369,000 cu.m and rural residents are projected to discharge 243,800 cu.m per day. More than 90% of total volume of wastewater in Vietnam has not yet been treated so far, causing serious environment pollution, experts said, adding that the nation targets to treat over 80% of its total wastewater volume by 2025.
