From NGO to Social Enterprise
Social entrepreneurship: from donor funding to entrepreneurial social impact
Why this course
Many not-for-profit organisations are looking for ways to enhance their sustainability, diversify their income streams and become less dependent on external funding, yet retain their social impact mission. One possibility is social entrepreneurship, i.e. offering valuable products and services, in line with your mission, that are (partially) paid and at the same time contribute to a meaningful social impact. Social entrepreneurship combines a market orientation with a social purpose, generating both financial and social revenues.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, you will:
- Understand what a social enterprise is: characteristics, elements and the differences with an NGO
- Understand the what and how of a social enterprise: business models, value propositions, financing streams and key partnerships
- Learn a step-by-step approach to transforming (parts of) your NGO into a social enterprise.
- Dive into sustainability and financing modalities and explore the growth projections
Course agenda
Day 1:
- Introduction to social enterprise development; what is a social enterprise?
- The organisation of a social enterprise: the what and the how
- Steps to a become a social enterprise; the road ahead for your organisation
- The social enterprise business model: from a mission to a value proposition
Day 2:
- From beneficiaries to clients: researching market opportunities and client segments
- Your organisational readiness: PESTLE and SWOT
- Identification of strategic, implementation and resource partners to deliver on the value proposition
Day 3:
- Guest lecture on social enterprise management: generating new (financing) ideas
- Social enterprise financing streams: financers, investors and Domestic Support Raising
- Financial growth projections of your social enterprise ideas
- Beneficiaries and social impact: defining social impact and (re-)defining beneficiaries
- Action planning and closure
- Accountability and sustainability as competitive advantages
Who should join?
Staff of organisations involved in the strategic direction of (parts of) the organisation: NGO’s, private sector organisations, UN organisations, governments), who need to understand how to guide social entrepreneurship efforts.
