Training Program Logistics
The Planning for Sustainable Fisheries in MPAs is sponsored by the DANIDA through a partnership between LMPA component under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Wolrd Wildfund Vietnam (WWF Vietnam). This is an 9-day program, held from August 31 to September 8, 2009 in Nha Trang.. This area was chosen as a living case study for the training due to its proximity to Nha Trang MPA and local fishing communities,
Training Participants
This is an intensive in-residence program for MPA mangers and staff, fisherman and government officials. Applicants will be chosen based on their ability to commit to the timeframe of the training; level of representation for their MPA or fishing community; and willingness to implement, through a contract agreement, the knowledge and lessons learned from the training program during the 6-12 months proceeding their training.
Training Program Structure
The MPA Management Capacity Building Training Program is by design participatory, interactive and requires teamwork. Participants engage in sharing case studies and lessons learned; will give presentations; work together on both group and individual projects and problem solving exercises. All participants will work with their roundtable “team” of 6-7 other participants, which will be headed by a team lead. Each team will make an agreement to maintain their “social network” after the training, and remain as a support system for implementing their site-specific demonstration projects developed during the training. In order to receive maximum benefit from the training, applicants are asked to commit to the entire duration of the training program and to build and implement demonstration projects after the training.
The training will be held straight through the 9 days. Each day will cover a different topical area and include both classroom work and field work. On some days homework will be required, and full participation is required each day. Evenings and lunch break will be left open, although optional related activities will be offered such as: participant presentations on their area of expertise or interest; additional case studies; cultural evenings; or field trips.
Curriculum
Curriculum for the Planning for Sustainable Fisheries in MPAs training is specifically tailored to the needs of the MPA in Asia. NOAA staff developed customized training specifically for this region. Training modules include detailed daily working agendas; a training manual including curriculum, exercises and handouts; and, accompanying powerpoint presentations keyed to the training manual. Case studies are used to illustrate key points, and to the extent possible, local or regional examples used. Additionally, the training manual is intended to be a resource for the participants when they go out in the field, and thus contains more information then was actually covered during the training. All materials are translated into Vietnamese.
The purpose of the training is not to provide solutions, but rather options for moving towards more sustainable fisheries, particularly in marine protected areas. They will work towards developing an understanding of different stakeholders’ roles, goals and objectives for sustainable fisheries; identify where there is common ground; then, identify areas where we can move forward, together, to realize our common goals and objectives.
