Vietnam Leads Southeast Asia in Sending Students abroad: Report

Vietnam, followed by Indonesia and Malaysia, tops the Southeast Asian nations in sending students overseas, according to a report by Acumen, an international education consultant.

According to the 2024 Key Trends in Southeast Asia report, Southeast Asia boasted over 350,000 students studying abroad in 2022, positioning it as the third-largest region globally for outbound student mobility, trailing only behind China and India.

Within the region, Vietnam emerged as the frontrunner with a significant number of outbound students, totaling 132,000, followed by Indonesia and Malaysia, each with 56,000, and Thailand with 32,000.

The report, drawing data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), highlights Japan as the top destination for Vietnamese students, hosting over 44,100, followed by South Korea with nearly 25,000.

In the United States, Vietnamese students also led Southeast Asia, numbering over 23,100.

Australia and Canada also emerged as other prominent destinations for Vietnamese students, with 14,100 and 9,000 respectively.
