Vietnam reaffirmed its commitments to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD)’s Program of Action, including terms in poverty reduction, employment, reproductive health, and youth rights, an official from the Health Ministry said. Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien spoke of Vietnam’s commitments at a conference in Hanoi on July 10 ahead of the World Population Day [July 11]. This year’s day is themed “25 years of the ICPD: accelerating the promise.” He stated that Vietnam has made great progress in conducting the 11 priority actions in the Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development in the past 25 years. Chief Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Vietnam Astrid Bant said Vietnam joined 178 other countries to adopt the declaration in 1994. Data showed that the rate of married women in the least developed countries using modern contraceptive methods increased to 37% now from 15%, the maternal mortality rate in these nations also halved from 800 in 1994. Vietnam and other countries have begun to implement the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development since 2016, aiming to achieve the 17 sustainable development goals.
