Vietnam’s Hanoi to Launch Foreign-funded Railway in June: MRB

Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi will start the commercial operation of the Nhon-Hanoi station urban railway in June, leaders of the Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB) said during a recent field trip to the project by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The board noted the project’s workload has reached over 77%, with the elevated section reaching 99.7% and the underground section at around 40%.

At the field trip, PM Chinh requested contractors and relevant units to accelerate the project’s progress to avoid a cost hike and low investment efficiency.

Hanoi has approved a cost overrun of nearly VND1.92 trillion ($80 million) for the Nhon-Hanoi station urban railway to raise its total investment to circa VND34.83 trillion.

The railway, spanning 12.5 kilometers through Bac Tu Liem, Nam Tu Liem, Cau Giay, Ba Dinh, Dong Da, and Hoan Kiem districts, is designed to have eight elevated stations and four underground ones.

The project receives funding from the official development assistance of the French government, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the country’s state budget.
