Japan Commits More ODA for Vietnam: JICA Chief Representative

The Japanese government always wants to provide as much official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam as possible due to the latter’s efficient use of the financial source, an official from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said. JICA Chief Representative Motonori Tsuno made the statement while on a courtesy call to Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan on May 13 before ending his office term in Vietnam. Mr. Tsuno also affirmed that he would do his best to contribute to the development of the relationship between Vietnam and Japan. For his part, Mr. Nhan praised Mr. Tsuno’s contributions to the joint cooperation programs between the two countries and Japan’s increasing ODA provision to support infrastructure development, poverty reduction, workforce training and administrative reform in Vietnam. Particularly, Deputy PM Nhan thanked the JICA for its financial assistance in Vietnam’s satellite development project and for helping Hanoi Polytechnic University train IT students in Japan. Japan resumed providing ODA to Vietnam at the end of 1992 and is currently the Southeast Asian country’s largest ODA donor. So far, nearly JPY2.118 trillion in ODA has been pledged to Vietnam, primarily in the fields of infrastructure development and climate change response. (news.gov.vn May 13)
