Belgium Set to Adopt Resolution in Aid of Victims of AO/Dioxin in Vietnam

The Belgian Chamber of Representatives is expected to approve a resolution in support of victims of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam, said President of the Belgian Senate Stéphanie D'Hose, who is on a visit to the Southeast Asian country.

Speaking to Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong in Hanoi on August 22, the Senate President said the resolution aims to call on the Belgian government to increase aids for victims of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam and to support Vietnamese government help the victims.

There will be more Belgian missions traveling to Vietnam to boost cooperation and seek investment chances after her Vietnam trip, Ms. D'Hose said, suggesting both sides facilitate the travel of people of the two nations for stronger people-to-people diplomacy, economic, trade, and tourism collaboration.

President Thuong, for his part, proposed the two sides step up high-ranking mission exchanges and advance joint projects related to education, investment, trade, climate change response, digital transformation, and green economy.

The Vietnamese leader also asked for Belgium’s backing for ASEAN and Vietnam’s stance on the East Sea issue, which is to ensure the safety and freedom of navigation and overflight and settle disputes in a peaceful manner in line with international law, especially the UNCLOS 1982.

Belgium is one of Vietnam’s leading trading partners in the EU, and Vietnam is Belgium’s biggest trading partner in ASEAN. Trade between the two nations reached $4.73 billion in 2022.
