600-kg Bomb Found during Vietnam Central Highlands Bridge Construction

A 600-kg bomb was found at a bridge construction site in Vietnam’s Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on September 23.

Workers were using excavators along the Da Huoai River in Da P’Loa Commune, Da Huoai District, three hours from tourist town Da Lat, when they encountered a hard object. An inspection revealed it to be a bomb 1.5 m long embedded deep under the ground.

The military headquarters of Da Huoai District and the Da P’Loa People’s Committee have cordoned off the area, stopped construction and evacuated people.

Safety measures have been implemented to protect the 10 or so families living near the site.

Authorities said the bomb could be a relic from the Vietnam War [which ended in 1975]. The bomb has been removed to be defused, and authorities are searching nearby areas for more bombs.

Earlier this year workers at another construction site in Da Huoai District also found a 250-kg bomb underground. (Congly, Vnexpress)
