ABOUT SHRIMP WELFARE PROJECT

Shrimp Welfare Project is a newly created charity in the Effective Animal Advocacy space. Effective Altruism (EA) and the idea that all sentient beings deserve equal consideration are the core values that our team shares. EA is a philosophical and social movement that advocates the use of evidence and reasoning to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. Learn more at effectivealtruism.org - it’s really important for us!

Our mission is to positively impact the lives of billions of shrimps*, in the most cost-effective way possible. To achieve this, we have a two-pronged strategy:

  1. Supply-side: work with farmers in Vietnam and India to help them address a number of welfare issues related to shrimp farming, including but not limited to water quality.
  2. Demand-side: reaching out to relevant stakeholders (such as seafood importers in Europe) to commit to source their shrimp from producers that fulfill certain higher welfare standards.

In the medium term, we aim to transition consumption towards a (today inexistent) market for higher-welfare shrimps.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We are looking for a generalist in-country program coordinator to assist with the strategic planning and implementation of our supply-side work in Vietnam.

Your role, as manager on the ground, will include the following:

  1. Farmer outreach: we aim to enroll 5-10 new farms (with approximately 1 ha of grow-out ponds each) every year to implement our welfare interventions. The person in this role will need to earn and maintain farmers’ trust. The first 2-3 months will be mostly focused on visiting as many farmers and participants in the supply chain as possible.
  2. Assessment: with the help of our protocol, it will be your responsibility to determine the state of affairs in each farm and whether they are viable candidates for our program.
  3. Technical assistance: once a farm has been enrolled, you will be in charge of determining what remedial actions should be taken to improve the lives of shrimp in each particular farm (out of those already identified by SWP as an organization). This will include providing training and overall free technical assistance and services (e.g. water quality monitoring).
  4. Attract and develop local talent: help identify, recruit, interview, and select new team members in-country.
  5. Organizational Network: you will be the point person to build and develop SWP’s relationship with local authorities and other organizations (NGOs, industry associations, etc.).

WHAT WE NEED

  • Good level of spoken, read, and written English skills.
  • Prior involvement in the animal protection movement.

  • Interest in working in a fluid startup environment.
  • Ability to build and manage a team.
  • Constant access to a reliable internet connection.
  • Willingness to travel frequently (travel costs will be covered by SWP).

If you feel you only partially meet the requirements, we still encourage you to apply! It only takes a few minutes of your time.

WHAT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE

  • Willingness to relocate close to Ho Chi Minh or close to the Mekong Delta.
  • Ability to communicate with shrimp farmers in their language.
  • 2-3 years of management experience.
  • Knowledgeable of and aligned with the core values of Effective Altruism.
  • Experience in shrimp farming or aquaculture in Vietnam.

BENEFITS OF WORKING AT SWP

  • You will help millions of sentient animals.
  • Gain experience building and scaling a highly effective non-profit in a startup environment.
  • As one of the first joiners, you will have a significant influence on the direction of the organization as a whole.
  • Gain access to a community of like-minded individuals.
  • Learn (more) about the Effective Altruism and Effective Animal Advocacy movements (materials will be provided).
