Trainers for Training course on Climate Change Mitigation in Vietnam
to Climate Change Working Group (CCWG) members
Background
Climate Change Working Group in Vietnam (CCWG - http://www.ngocentre.org.vn/ccwg), established in 2008, brings together International Nongovernment Organizations (INGO), Vietnamese NGOs, development agencies, institutions, professionals and individuals. The network’s mission is to contribute to reducing the vulnerability of poor people in Vietnam to the impacts of climate change through NGO coordination, advocacy, and capacity building to its members. Oxfam has been the chair of the CCWG since 2015. Oxfam is an international confederation of 18 organizations working together in more than 90 countries. Oxfam works with partner organisations and alongside vulnerable women and men to end injustices.
Related to capacity building, the objective of the network is to ensure NGOs in Vietnam enhance effectively their capacity to respond to climate change and have access to climate change (CC) related to information, training courses and funding opportunity. Recent two years, CCWG organized several training courses for members to increase awareness and capacity about climate change adaptation, negotiation skills and how to work effectively with media and journalists.
Because Vietnam is one of the most affected countries in the world due to climate change, the core mission of the network is to mobilize its effort to support the government and vulnerable communities to adapt to climate change. At COP21 in Paris, the Government of Vietnam (GoV) submitted the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which aims for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of 8-25% until 2030. In this context, CCWG recognized the emerging requirement for the network is to advocate Gov on renewable energy aiming at a higher ambition of a GHG reduction commitment as well as achievement of 100% renewable energy under the commitment of Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), of which Vietnam is an official member.
Considering the necessity for advocacy, while CCWG members have limited understanding and capacity in mitigation, Oxfam as the chair of CCWG, after consulting with the network core members, decided to organize a training course in mitigation for the members. This training course is an activity under European Climate Foundation (ECF) to support CCWG to advocate for 100% renewable energy by 2050.
Objectives of the training course
The overal objective of the training course is to increase the awareness and improve the advocacy capacity of the network members in mitigation, renewable energy, and issues related to coal fire power plants.
The specific objectives are for CCWG members to:
- Understand the basic knoweldge about mitigation concept, the benefits and disadvantages of renewable energy and coal fire power plants
- Gain a better understanding of stakeholders through power mapping of their mitigation activities
- Strengthen CCWG members’ capacty in advocacy by using recently developed materials for renewable energy and mitigation.
