Senior Advisor - Engineering position

SNV Vietnam is looking for a Senior Advisor – Engineering position for the Market Acceleration of Advanced Clean Cookstoves in the Greater Mekong Sub-region project, based in Hanoi with frequent travel (Employment Contract)

SNV Netherlands Development Organisation has been working in Vietnam since 1995. Using market based approaches, SNV is committed to reducing poverty by catalyzing environmentally sustainable solutions for the poor in agriculture, energy, water & sanitation, and REDD+.

SNV started working with Clean Cookstove projects in 2011 and is currently implementing an Advanced Clean Cookstove project in 3 countries; Vietnam, Lao PDR and Cambodia.  In this project, which is funded by EnDev Energising Development and the Blue Moon Fund. The project has a strong private sector approach and is aiming at incentivizing the sales of cookstoves that meet the strict project requirements. This innovative project approach is better known as result based finance. SNV will also work with local stove producers to help them increase the thermal efficiency and reduce emissions from their cookstoves

We are seeking a technically gifted and motivated national candidate with an affinity for renewable energy and advanced clean cookstoves to fill in the position of Senior Advisor as part of the project team. 

Responsibilities

As senior advisor renewable energy you will work directly with Vietnamese stove producers in Vietnam to help them to increase the performance of their cookstoves based on their needs.

  • Perform gap analysis between current capacity and stove eligibility criteria.
  • Draft plan in cooperation with stove producers on increasing quality of stoves based on their needs.
  • Visiting companies to support them in engineering and designing a stove that meets the requirements of the project, which includes IWA tier 2 for thermal efficiency and emissions among other requirements.
  • Advise and support the companies in the process of redesigning the stoves in order to meet project criteria.
  • Support companies to build testing prototypes and helping them to execute water boiling tests before moving forward to certified lab testing.

Further tasks, which will be executed in cooperation with the SNV ICS team are:

  • Designing the controlled cooking testing protocol for Vietnam.
  • Build up capacity on testing assessment for ICS team in Vietnam.
  • Perform field based verification visits.
  • Support to organize engineering workshops (developing materials such as training manuals, quality control materials).
  • Contribute to internal and external knowledge development.

Expected outputs and deliverables

  • Gap analysis capacity of existing stove producers
  • Technical part of the stove design workshop
  • Minimum of 5 producers that can produce cookstoves that meet IWA tier 2 for thermal efficiency and emissions and tier 3 regarding safety.

Candidate profile

  • Vietnamese national
  • Master/Engineering of Energy or Environment or related fields
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant working experience with cookstoves or renewable energy sector
  • Experience working stove producers.
  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to manufacturers and project field sites
  • Initiative and creative in solving problems with strong facilitation and analytical skills
  • Strong ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Good organizing skills and interpersonal skills

Contract Duration: SNV Vietnam offers 10 months employment contract

Desired start date: 16th of February 2016
