Research Coordinator Sought for School-based Gender Violence Project - Urgent!

DESCRIPTION:

In 2011, Paz y Desarrollo, with technical support from International Centre for Research on Women India (ICRW) and UN Regional Programme Partners for Prevention started to adapt the Gender Equity Movement in Schools project (ICRW) for piloting in Danang City secondary schools. The aim of the pilot is to prevent and mitigate gender-based violence in society through a school-based gender equity and violence prevention curriculum and campaign activities. The primary target group of the project is boys and girls (11-14 years of age) in grades 6 and 7.

Paz y Desarrollo seeks a rigorous evaluation of the schools-based project to add to the existing evidence base in Vietnam and internationally on what works in terms of primary prevention schools-based interventions. To this effect, a research and evaluation consultant is sought to design a rigorous evaluation design, assemble and manage a local research team, manage coordination between different research partners, and provide ongoing support for monitoring and evaluation throughout the 3-year project term.

PURPOSE:

The Research Coordinator conducts and supervises specific research activities in PyD’s Danang Schools GBV project; manages staff responsible for basic research activities within the programme, acts as a contact person for other PyD staff/ consultants; and works with PyD staff/ consultants on the writing of project reports.

The Research Coordinator reports to the Technical Adviser – Research and Evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties will include, but not be restricted to:

1. Assisting in the planning and implementation of the field research for the PyD Danang Schools project
- In collaboration with the Technical Advisor (TA) – Research and Evaluation, define the specific terms of the research framework.
- Assist in the development of the conceptual and methodological frameworks and detailed implementation plans for the Danang study.

2. Planning, conducting and supervising research and other programme-related activities, including:
- Conducting and/or supervising data collection.
- Conducting and supervising data analysis.
- Taking the lead in writing reports based on research findings.
- Supervising and mentoring research assistants and other staff, when in and out of the field, and ensuring they have adequate support.
- Preparing narrative reports for TA and PyD Program management, and other documents.
- Ensuring logistical support for research activities.

3. Contributing to the broader objectives of the PyD Danang Schools project, including:
- In partnership with TA, providing research training to members of the Research Department or others.
- Leading or participating in other Research Department activities, such as seminars, briefings and 'study groups'.
- In collaboration with PyD/ TA, determining dissemination strategies for findings and publications in order to increase research impact.

LOCATION: The Research coordinator is based in Danang for the duration of the assignment.

DURATION: This position will be contracted for 40 work days, September – October 2012.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential:
- A degree in the social sciences, focused on gender issues; or substantial relevant research experience.
- Strong research skills, using both qualitative and quantative methods.
- Strong writing skills in English, including narrative reports
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
- Evidence of good mentoring, training and supervision skills.

Desirable:
- An advanced degree in the social sciences (PHD preferred)
- Knowledge of statistical software packages
