The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate to coordinate the design and implementation of the gender components of various projects that focus on One Health, food safety, sustainable livestock, egg and poultry meat systems and value chains.  The role will play a key role in disseminating the research outputs, in particular through scientific publications and other means.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Key responsibilities

The Gender Research Associate will coordinate the design and implementation of the gender components of various projects:

  • The Safe-Pork project-including field visits focusing on gendered food safety assessments, overcome gender constraints for adaption of interventions and their scaling and suggest appropriate risk communication measures.
  • SAPLING One CGIAR initiative: Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender inclusion
  • ONE HEALTH:  One CGIAR initiatives on Protecting Human Health through a One Health Approach
  • Asian Chicken Genetic Gains (AsCGG) project: including field visits focusing on the community innovation platforms establishment and functioning with a primary goal of poor smallholder farmers, especially women, empowered and access improved-preferred chicken germplasms for enhanced livelihood outcomes in South-East Asia
  • ICT MAFRA:  Improving human health through sustainable value chains in human-animal-environmental interactions using ICT in Vietnam
  • Ensure gender components appropriately included in the projects by identifying entry points and implementing recommendations.
  • Facilitate gender-related participatory research, including assessments and community engagement, for livestock and food safety related interventions
  • Conduct capacity building activities for the project team on gender aspects
  • Implement data collection and assist in research analysis
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific publications as well as outputs for a wider audience
  • Coordinate with local partners and community groups in research planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation
  • Ensure an efficient communication flow between local partners and the ILRI team
  • Suggest on, develop and organise capacity building efforts on gender aspects for local partners in Vietnam and the region

Requirements

  • MSc in a social science (geography, anthropology, sociology, development studies, economics) with an emphasis on gender/equity aspects
  • Experience in designing, collecting and analysing gender related data.
  • Minimum 5 year experience in similar position
  • Ability to thrive in a multi-cultural professional environment and with minimum supervision
  • Experience working with development partners
  • Familiarity with gender and agriculture  system issues and challenges in Vietnam, and in South East Asia is preferred
  • Exposure to livestock system is an advantage
  • Good analytical skills – either qualitative or quantitative
  • Ability to support capacity building on gender for the project teams
  • Capacity to work independently
  • Good interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills
  • Publication record is preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-regional teams and partners with members drawn from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures and scientific disciplines
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to deliver timely high-quality deliverables.
  • Strong analytical and report writing skills
  • Willingness to travel frequently, often to rural areas and spend time in the field

Terms of Appointment

This position is based in: Hanoi, Vietnam

The position is on 2 years Fixed term contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Job Level

This position is at job level HG 12 and open to Vietnamese nationals only. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances for ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff.
