Job description – Qualitative Research Officer

Organisation: Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Vietnam

The Woolcock Institute is lung health research organisation, based at Sydney University, Australia (http://www.woolcock.org.au/). The Institute has operated in Vietnam since 2009, we undertake large and important operational and epidemiological and clinical research projects in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Program in 9 Provinces, including Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Woolcock also runs training in epidemiological and operational research methods for Vietnamese doctors and public health workers.

Currently the Woolcock directly employs 60 full-time staff in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Ca Mau.

Location: this person will work in Hanoi and Thanh Hoa provinces

Duration: 6 months appointment, with consideration for subsequent extension. This position will begin in November 2017.

Roles:

To participate in a study of stigma, as a part of an international project to develop a new stigma scale for use in patients with tuberculosis,  and collaborate closely with international researchers to perform outstanding qualitative interviews.

Reports to: Principal Investigator, Country Director

Key staff working with the project:

  • Trial/Project Coordinators

  • Laboratory staff

Main duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Conducting in-depth interviews with patients attending health facilities

  • Establishing rapport with study participants, exploring sensitive issues in an empathic and nuanced manner

  • Supporting an Australian researcher to interpret interview findings, and refine interview questions

  • Summarising interview findings and identifying principal themes

  • Transcribing audio recordings of interviews in Vietnamese

  • Translating transcripts from Vietnamese to English

  • Obtaining support from local health workers and patients to undertake interviews

  • Providing administration and financial support to Australian researcher

Required education, skills and qualities

Essential criteria:

  • Substantial experience conducting qualitative research, including in depth interviews, within the health care sector

  • Ability to perform analysis for qualitative interviews, either manually or using appropriate software (e.g. VIVO)

  • A high degree of empathy towards the feelings of others

  • Fluent Vietnamese

  • Excellent English language skills skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Ability to work as a member of an international team, and independently

 

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience working with disadvantaged groups

  • Experience working with researchers within international organisations

  • An IELTS score of at least 6.0, or equivalent.

  • Bachelor of Public Health, or equivalent.
