Participant Observation Advisor

SUSFORM-NOW project is looking for an experienced and qualified applicant to fill in Participant Observation advisor.

Position title: Participant Observation Advisor
Background:
SUSFORM-NOW project is conducting participant observation activities for recording villager’s endogenous development in our pilot sites collaborating with Tay Bac University (TBU) and Dien Bien Provincial Vocational Junior College (DBPVJC). The SUSFORM-NOW project provides opportunity for (ex-)students of TBU and DBPVJC to exercise ethnographical survey at the pilot sites as Monitoring Volunteers. Monitoring Volunteers are writing Field Notes, recording all the activities of villagers and SUSFORM-NOW project at each pilot site by participatory observation of the villagers to measure their endogenous development. At the beginning of each month,
Monitoring Volunteers make a Monthly Report of the previous month, which is a summary of the Field Notes, and submit it to the project. Those Field Notes and Monthly Report will be used for mid-term and final evaluations of the project to measure qualitative changes of the villagers and the pilot sites.

Job description:
- Structuring and analyzing the Field Notes, applying ethnography methods, to illustrate endogenous development of the villagers and the pilot sites;
- Evaluating the effectiveness of the Field Notes, Monthly Reports and the other monitoring activities by the Monitoring Volunteers, as measures to monitor qualitative changes of the villagers and the pilot sites
- Recommendations for improvement of the participatory observation, especially in the terms of techniques for writing Field Notes, making Monthly Reports and the other monitoring activities, including guidance for the Monitoring Volunteers assigned both actually and in future;
- Provide guidance for the Monitoring Volunteers to improve their participatory observation and ethnography survey results, such as Field Notes and Monthly Reports, based on the recommendations above; and
- Submit a work completion report written in English, including the recommendations and results of the guidance for the Monitoring Volunteers, both mentioned above.

Job requirement:
- More than Master degree in social science or related disciplines;
- More than five years’ job experience;
- Experiences of ethnographical study/survey;
- Teaching experience of ethnographical study/survey;
- Fluent in both English and Vietnamese (Required English level is equivalent of TOEFL(ibt) 85, TOEIC 750 or IELTS 6.5);
- Strong analytical and reporting skills;
- Ability to work both as in a team or independently;
- Proficient in computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) etc.;
- Willing to work in a cross cultural environment; and
- Willing to work and travel in Dien Bien Province.

Working period: One and half month from the end of Dec. 2011 or the beginning of Jan. 2012, full-time position
Salary: Determined based upon the experience of the candidate hired. Allowance for housing and meals will be provided for the basis of the employee for outside of Dien Bien province following employ’s cost norm.
Base in: Dien Bien Phu City / Dien Bien Province
