National Scientist in Agroforestry

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), generates science-based knowledge about the complex role that trees play in agricultural landscapes and uses its research to ensure that policies and practices benefit the poor and the environment. Their vision is an 'agroforestry transformation' in the developing world—a massive increase in the use of trees on landscapes by smallholder rural households to ensure security in food, nutrition, income, health, shelter and energy, and a regenerated environment.
Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) conducts research in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The Position:
Under supervision of Vietnam Country Coordinator, the National Scientist is responsible for taking part in assuring the quality, integration, planning and implementation of ICRAF Vietnam annual work plan in accordance with the ICRAF national, regional and global strategy programs. This role includes managing overall project activities, participating in the research scientific agenda, assistance in establishing and facilitating partnerships, resource mobilization and liaising with partners, donors, ICRAF staff in SEA and other staff in other regions, and ICRAF management. She/he will undertake the
following duties and responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research tasks:
- Participating in technically coordinating fieldwork of the on-going projects on rewarding upland people for environmental services, reducing emission from any land use (REALU) and agroforestry systems development. The scientist will participate in research as the principle investigator in Bac Kan and Northwest region (Son La, Dien Bien and Yen Bai) research and take the lead in report writings.
- Contributing to producing scientific publications and other publication materials on the topics of environmental services, climate change and agroforestry systems of ICRAF research program with sites in Vietnam.
- Participating in exploring of new funding opportunities for Vietnam and Southeast Asia (SEA) region in the field of Environmental Services, Agroforestry systems, REDD, and REALU. The work would involve the strategic development of concept notes, work plan, fund raising and proposal development with other staff in Vietnam and SEA.
- Participating in linking Climate Change and Environment Services research activities in Vietnam with those in SEA and globally: the scientist will work closely with regional and global teams on planning and implementation of ICRAF’s Medium Term Plan (3 yearly planning) and reporting Vietnam activities to ICRAF SEA Regional Office and to Global Project Leaders.
Research management and Partnership tasks:
- The national scientist will take the leading role in providing back up to national partners involved in ICRAF research, participating actively into policy processes, sharing and managing research database and information.
- Participating in the research strategy development and implementation, research team building and management activities (including budget); research and survey design and oversight; and recruiting and managing consultancies

The Requirements:
- Vietnamese nationality holding an international PhD in natural resource management or forestry
- Minimum 5-year working experience and an excellent proven record of scientific publications.
- Extensive experience in national networking, coordinating and communication of international projects in the related fields.
- Proven research coordination and leadership ability;
- Strong team-building, networking skills and analytical research ability
- The ability to manage stressful working situations ;
- Excellent written and spoken English;
- Knowledge of computer programs: Windows, Office package, Email and Internet. Skill in using GIS and Remote
- Sensing for NRM research and statistics software is an additional merit.
