The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role which trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health. The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in 34 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Position

ICRAF Viet Nam country office is seeking for the dynamic motivated Market and Value Chain Researcher to fill the vacant at country office based in Hanoi. This position is 50% part-time and created to lead the market and value chain research and business development of the BftW funded project “Agroecology for resilient landscapes to overcome poverty of ethnic minorities in Northern uplands” (2021-2025), and newly funded project “People, Primates, Plants: Co-managing Biodiversity and Improving Livelihoods in Vietnam” (2022-2025).

Under the day-to-day supervision of the Viet Nam Country Coordinator, the position-holder is required to fulfil items listed below:

Main Responsibilities

  1. Project commencement: Agroecology for resilient landscapes to overcome poverty of ethnic minorities in Northern uplands (funded by Bread for The World)
    • Lead the implementation of Activity  2 (Study with special focus on the role of women on market opportunities, potentials, value chain for key native products like taro, medicinal plants),
    • Lead Activity 8 (Facilitate farmers organizational capacities, structures, business planning, value chain development for at least 2 key products per district), including development of training and extension materials and training sessions in collaboration with local extension and other relevant partners, and pepper private sectors;
    • Contribute to other activities, such as Activity 5 (Community-led analysis of local problems) Activity 6 (Agroecological landscape formation), and Activity 10 (Networking).
  2. Market and value chain specialist: People, Primates, Plants: Co-managing Biodiversity and Improving Livelihoods in Vietnam (funded by Darwin Initiative through BGCI):  
    • Lead the survey on market opportunities and value chains, with a special focus on gender roles and equality, of at least 4 key agroforestry products
    • Lead the gender disaggregated training needs-assessment and development of training materials and training program for training of trainers (TOT) on market and small-scale farm business development
    • Provide TOT training for community representatives and local officials on market, small-scale farm businesses.
    • Provide backstopping and follow-up to local community and partners in market, small-scale farm business development
    • Contribute to other activities of the project where relevant.
  3. Partnership, outreach, and program development
    • Promote CIFOR-ICRAF work through conference presentations, blogs, organizing and attending workshops
    • Lead or contribute to development of concept notes and proposals
    • Perform other tasks as deemed necessary

Qualifications and Skills Required

Minimum Academic and Professional Qualifications:

  • Master degree in agricultural economics, agrobusiness and/or related fields, PhD is an asset
  • Proven publication records.

Minimum Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably related to agricultural economics, agrobusiness
  • Experience in working with not-for-profit organizations and government institutions.
  • Experience in project management. 

Skills and Competencies

  • Pro-active and independent way of working

  • Excellent writing skills in English and Vietnamese, including scientific writing
  • Experience in proposal development
  • Well organized; demonstrated ability to meet deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to generate creative, practical approaches to overcoming challenging situations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a range of staff and consultants
  • Good computer literacy (especially for graphic, design and illustration software)
  • Demonstrated ability in time management and working under pressure
  • Strong drive to learn new topics and skills and to see research and ideas having positive impact in practice
  • Independent, rigorous, excellent social skills, and passionate and motivated by the social and environmental impact potential of their work
  • Comfortable with public speaking and workshop facilitation
  • Willing to spend time in the field
  • Multi-tasking person and able to work under pressure
  • Open to receiving feedbacks from others

Terms of offer

  • Initial one-year contract with a competitive salary, to be renewed upon performance and budget availability.
  • The contract is subject to 3 (three) monthsprobation period, assessment of performance
  • Start of working as soon as possible. Immediate availability to join ICRAF team is a merit.
