Area of Selection:

This position is open to applicants eligible to work in Vietnam who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Hanoi. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Hanoi at own expense.

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Property and Materials Manager, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for the completion of general repairs in one or more of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and painting and specific functional maintenance (such as refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, auto/vehicle mechanics, audio-visual) duties and schedules for the Chancery, the Official Residence and all mission Crown-owned or Crown-leased assets and equipment.

The incumbent must assist with preparing preventive maintenance programs. The incumbent must also assist the Property/Materials Manager and third party vendors with the completion of various projects outside their area of expertise. The incumbent is also required to supervise and inspect work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with the Embassy’s workplace rules and the manufacturer’s specifications, in consultation with the supervisor when required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Successful completion of compulsory schooling
  • Completion of technical vocational certificate in a related discipline, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or relevant experience

Language:

  • Basic knowledge of English (read, write, speak)
  • Fluency in Vietnamese (read, write, speak)

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years’ experience (in the last five years) in the performance of general repairs in one OR more functional areas such as: carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, painting or specific functional maintenance (e.g., refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, auto/vehicle mechanics)
  • Experience in the supervision of contractors, employees or projects to ensure adherence to technical specifications and diligence in the performance of work

Knowledge:

  • General knowledge of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, painting, basic carpentry, and masonry
  • Knowledge of basic principles of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Knowledge of project management principles
  • Knowledge of the health and safety standards required in maintenance and property-related fields
  • Familiarity with use of computers and mobile devices

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications at the moment of the application:

  • Knowledge of French
  • Experience in preparing and executing preventive maintenance programs for basic building systems
  • Certifications in Workplace Health and Safety Diploma from a technical secondary school
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following technical fields: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning.

Operational Requirements:

  • Must hold a valid driving license (motorcycle);
  • Must be available to respond in case of emergency to telephone calls which may take place after working hours and during weekends/holidays.
  • Ability to travel independently using a mission vehicle (motorcycle) between work sites.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance from the Government of Canada
  • Must meet the employer’s medical requirements by undergoing a medical evaluation by a physician
  • Must be able to work extended hours with minimal notice
  • Must be able to lift and carry loads of up to 23 kg
