About the positions

The Land Cover Mapping Visiting Researcher will assist the creation of land cover maps for projects across the tropics. The key target crops will include coffee, cocoa, and other tree crops. The land cover maps are a central part of a broader effort to develop systems and services to support decision making across a range of both NGO and industry users.

The Visiting Researcher will work as part of a remote sensing team to extend and improve a crop location database. The locations are obtained through interpretation of high-resolution satellite imagery. The Land Cover Mapping Visiting Researcher will learn new skills related to documenting and streamlining locations acquisition methodologies and validation of different land cover maps.

Location: Hanoi, Vietnam
Terms of Appointment: 6-month Visiting Researcher Fellowship, with the possibility to convert to an employee contract dependent on interest and performance. (Up to 2 Visiting Researcher Positions are available)

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather and digitalize land cover location datasets based on high resolution imagery in combination with commodity maps
  • Review and improve the data gathering and pre-processing used to train land cover classification models using neural networks
  • Support to summary the document of data gathering methodology
  • Conduct literature review as needed to support to identify key features as needed relating to land cover categories.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Fresh University graduate with BSc or MSc degree in related field of study (must have been out of school for no longer than 6 months at the time of applying)
  • Basic knowledge of QGIS or ArcGIS
  • Strong desire to learn and acquire new skills is required
  • Team player who thrives in a collaborative and dynamic workplace
  • Basic English communication skills (speaking, reading and writing) is required
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented and organized critical thinker with an ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Available to start in May 2021
