ILRI PhD Graduate fellowship in Medical Sciences (closing date: 2 September 2017)

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a PhD graduate fellow in the animal and human health program. The PhD student will be enrolled at Uppsala University, Sweden, (http://regler.uu.se/document/?contentId=626068) but based at ILRI office in Hanoi where the student will work in close collaboration with National Veterinary Research Institute (NIVR) and Center for Public Health and Ecosystem Research (CENPHER) of Hanoi University of Public Health.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

The Position:

The project will include studying urban livestock keeping in Hanoi, the distribution of arthropod vectors in the city, and the sero-prevalence of vector-borne diseases in the urban livestock.

Main ILRI Project Title:   Metropolitan mosquitoes: Understanding urban livestock keeping and vector-    borne disease in growing tropical cities

Graduate fellows project title: The association between livestock keeping and vector-borne diseases in Hanoi

Responsibilities:

The student is expected to take on the responsibility for leading the project under guidance from the ILRI and academic supervisors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Contacting partners, planning and conducting field work
  • Conducting laboratory work, including entomological work, serological and molecular methods
  • Performing data analysis under supervision
  • Drafting manuscripts
  • Presenting the work at meetings

Requirements:

  • Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Public Health with One Health focus or equivalent degree
  • Good computer literacy and experience with working with the MS office programs (or equivalent)
  • Fluent in English at a level equivalent to the required at Uppsala University (http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/vill_du_borja/vad_kravs...)
  • Fluent in Vietnamese
  • Experience of transdisciplinary work
  • Experience of field work and laboratory work is meriting

Location:  ILRI Hanoi, Vietnam

Duration of fellowship: 4 years

Terms of appointment and stipend: ILRI will offer a competitive stipend to cover living expenses in the project location. The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by an ILRI scientist and the university/academic supervisor.  The period for this project/fellowship will be 4 years, commencing September/October 2017.
