Background:

ICEM - the International Centre for Environment Management was established in 1999 to help governments and communities build capacity in the sustainable use of natural resources and maintenance of environmental quality. ICEM works in Asia - especially the Mekong countries - and focuses on climate change, water resources, biodiversity conservation and integrated assessments. ICEM seeks to integrate environmental concerns with development through spatial planning, socio-economic analysis and environmental assessment tools. Our goal is to ensure ecologically sustainable development, which is development that improves the total quality of life, both now and in the future, in a way that maintains the ecological processes on which life depends.

ICEM Modeler/Water Engineer

Your duties as Modeler/Water Engineer will include but not be limited to the following. Working under the ICEM GIS and Modelling Manager and in close interaction with relevant senior international staff, you will:

  • Conduct modeling linked to water resources management, disasters, climate change and Decision Support Systems (DSS);
  • Work as a key member in the modeling and GIS team to develop and use a free source modeling package which ICEM will promote and apply in its projects;
  • Support the preparation of training and interpretative materials to accompany our modeling package;
  • Take a key role in conducting GIS analysis and in preparing ICEM’s GIS products;
  • Support in creating and updating the ICEM GIS and statistical database for use in ICEM projects in line with ICEM’s core business focus (climate change, integrated assessment, biodiversity and water) including maintaining a system for managing ICEM’s metadata;
  • Spatial data collection, preparation and digitization;
  • Work with technical staff to identify project spatial analysis requirements and opportunities;
  • Undertake spatial analysis of datasets according to project requirements;
  • Preparation of thematic maps and figures for analysis, presentations and reporting;
  • Support the ICEM technical team in preparation of spatial materials for proposal and grant opportunities and for special events (eg. seminars, workshops and training); and
  • Conduct other appropriate technical support activities as required.

Skills specification:

  • Excellent spoken and written English;
  • University degree or higher, preferably in water engineering, GIS, Natural Resources & Environmental engineering, Natural Science, Mining & Geology;
  • Ability to use water modeling software to support Decision Support System DSS development;
  • Ability to use GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing software;
  • Good computer skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point (Adobe suite/ graphic design skills a plus);
  • Willing to travel to project sites;
  • Fieldwork and mapping skills;
  • Ability to work independently and/or in small teams;
  • Enthusiastic and hardworking;
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to development work; and
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in modelling, GIS, mapping, data management and implementation in related fields.
