Vacancy: Consultant for Household Training In Thuong Xuan – Thanh Hoa

Project Background

In October 2012, Save the Children and the Department of Health (DoH) in Thanh Hoa received fund from Irish Aid to implement a project titled “Improving the nutrition status of children 0-24 months” in Thuong Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province. The project started in October 2012 and has been implemented as an extension of the Alive & Thrive (A&T) initiative, a multi-year initiative, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and has been implemented in 15 provinces in Vietnam since 2009 with the aim of reducing death and morbidity caused by sub optimal IYCF practices. The goal of the project in Thuong Xuan is to improve how children are fed during the critical first 1,000 days to ensure that every child has a healthy start to life and is enabled to reach full potential. The approach is to use an IYCF Support Group (IYCF SG) platform to transfer knowledge and skills to mothers and caregivers of children 0-24 months. In addition to this preventive platform, the project has introduced the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) model in four communes with higher malnutrition rates.

In the framework of the phase 2 (from April 2014 to December 2015), the project plans to introduce one component of Household nutrition garden for members of IYCF support groups and household with Severe Acute Malnourished (SAM) children. Following guidance of IMAM model, SAM children need appropriate complementary feeding in their homes following their period of treatment. Given that many SAM children come from very poor families, the project will test the feasibility of setting up home nutrition gardens in these vulnerable households to ensure children receive the required dietary inputs. In addition, the process evaluation conducted in May 2014 also recommended that the project should introduce the Garden- Pool and husbandry (VAC in Vietnamese) model to household in Thuong Xuan. The model will provide local foods for children at home.
