Communications and Fundraising Officer

The Australian Foundation for the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific (AFAP) is an independent, secular, not-for-profit Australian non-government organisation founded in 1968. We are a membership-based aid organisation that takes Action on Poverty in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, primarily through a partnerships-based approach that sees us engage with in-country NGOs that have proven experience, skills and local understanding. In Vietnam, AFAP was the first Australian NGO to be formally registered to work in 1996. Our programme focuses on improving health, income generation, good governance, food security and resilience to the effects of climate change. AFAP has developed a solid reputation as a principled, innovative, and pioneering NGO working with a wide spectrum of stakeholders ranging from policy makers, local authorities to civil society organisations (CSOs) and vulnerable communities.

AFAP is seeking a staff member to play a key role in the fundraising and communications efforts of the organisation. The successful candidate will work closely with the Country Director of AFAP Vietnam and Sydney-based Communications, Marketing and Fundraising Manager, and have the opportunity to participate in a wide scope of fundraising and marketing activities to develop the communications, marketing and fundraising work of AFAP, including brand management and positioning.

Type of contract:     One year (extendable)

Work location:     Hanoi with travels to the fields

Salary:         Negotiable based on qualifications and experiences

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Marketing and Fundraising

  • Support Communications, Marketing and Fundraising Manager in Sydney Office to oversee community fundraising mechanism, corporate partnerships and bequest strategy;
  • Undertake market research and customer surveys to analyse demand and brand, approach positioning;
  • Write blog posts, newsletter articles and other donor engagement pieces;
  • Identify opportunities for fundraising with institutional donors and private foundations;
  • Research, evaluate and recommend fundraising techniques;
  • Pro-actively seek new forms of income for the organisation;
  • Support in building relationships with potential supporters to deliver income;
  • Provide information for and ensure the quality of grant proposals and reports;
  • Liaise with program team to supply information on funding and ensure the team has the information needed from programs to effectively communicate with and report to donors.

Communications

  • Take responsibility for the development, publication and distribution of all communication products;
  • Manage organisational communications strategies including website, print, social media, and public relations;
  • Develop materials to enhance donor communications including publications, audio/visual materials, fact sheet and fundraising packages;
  • Consult with program team to integrate and reflect project activities in communication channels.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Technical knowledge/skills:

  • Exceptional writing skills and passion for good writing;
  • Have a record of success in not-for-profit fundraising and marketing;
  • Knowledge of media production, communications, and dissemination techniques and methods;
  • Excellent relationship skills; ability to manage and nurture relationships both internally and externally;
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Report and proposal writing skills;
  • Good communication, analytical and negotiation skills.

Education: Relevant Degree and/or equivalent professional qualification, preferably in communications or marketing (Master degree is preferable).

Work experience: At least 4 years experience in marketing, fundraising, or corporate liaison and institutional networking for donors. Practical working experience with INGOs is preferable.

Language: Advanced English and Vietnamese, both spoken and written.
