Communication Manager - Strategic and Advocacy

Your role

To support the communication and relevant policy advocacy activities of IDH Vietnam programs in alignment with established impacts (better job, better income and better environment), IDH is looking for potential candidates for the position of Communication Manager. The position reports to IDH Vietnam Country Director and works in liaison with IDH Vietnam Programs Directors/Managers to develop and implement communication and advocacy strategy for IDH Vietnam Programs especially on coffee, pepper, cassia, aquaculture and textile. The geographic focus is the Central highlands and Mekong Delta. The role will have extensive contact and liaison within internal IDH departments and external partners.

Key responsibilities

1.     Support IDH Vietnam communication strategy in general

  • Act as the focal point of IDH Vietnam with IDH global communication team on communication and policy advocacy. Represent Vietnam in the IDH International Communications working group, joining all meetings, and collaborating regularly with the HQ and International Communications Team to contribute to the global IDH communication strategy and campaigns, and to disseminate global campaigns to regional and national audiences.
  • Coordinate for the development and implementation of IDH Vietnam communication and policy advocacy strategy/annual workplan.
  • Build a bank of case studies/impact stories on IDH programs in Vietnam with special focus on landscapes and coffee work through stakeholder interviews and field visits.
  • Responsible for producing IDH Vietnam annual progress/key achievement report and produce external communication materials in Vietnamese and English, such as news articles, press releases, blogs, social media updates, website content, major reports, videos/infographics. 
  • Engage and gain credibility among stakeholders (companies, governments, donors, civil society, financial institutions) through regular activity updates, impact stories, joint communication activities and clear and better positioning of our program overall.
  • Support the program teams in creating program-specific communications, such as events organization, flyers, posters and invitations.
  • Mitigate risk by developing a PR crisis plan, key messages and media/spokesperson training for the team.
  • Responsible for revising and updating IDH Vietnam website and leaflet.
  • Provide the overall advice to IDH Vietnam country team on communication products.

2.     Support IDH Vietnam Landscapes/Coffee programs

The position is expected to provide more support to IDH Vietnam Landscape/coffee programs with specific tasks as below:

  • In charge of influencing policy through advocating for specific policy reforms, enforcement and investment at national and provincial level, for scaling of landscape approach in sustainable forestry/agricultural production.
  • Develop a comprehensive 3-year strategic communications roadmap, which guides internal communications (within Vietnam Landscape/Coffee team, and with IDH HQ, SourceUp units), external program visibility and positioning towards central and local governmental agencies and businesses.
  • Drive the collaborative development of program stakeholder maps, key messages and message differentiators by target audience.
  • Develop annual work plan which outlines detailed objectives, priority target groups, tools/channels and communication products for mobilization, outreach, and engagement that are aligned with agreed priority issue areas each year/period.
  • Raise the profile of IDH Vietnam Landscape/Coffee programs through: local and national PR showing IDH’s work in Vietnam as systems change putting people, planet and progress at the heart of trade
  • Closely cooperate with public and private implementing partners in joint communication activities such as co-creating and sharing news/impact stories/achievements on IPs’ channels
  • Create at least two communication outputs tailored for priority global target audiences, showcasing the impact of the Landscape/Coffee program in Vietnam in line with the requirements of IDH HQ global campaigns, for example, Farmer and Forest Positive Business, Procurement, Carbon or Income.
  • Serve as focal points for IDH brand identity and tone of voice, supporting professionalization by Vietnam Landscape team members to more effectively reach their stakeholders and achieve their programmatic goals by the adopting the new IDH brand and tone of voice and using strategic communication to reach programmatic objectives.

Who you are

  • You are an experienced expert in the area of communication, policy advocacy on at least one of the following topics: sustainable natural resources management, responsible agriculture supply chains and/or landscape development. You combine technical knowledge with facilitation and negotiation skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. You have a solid understanding of the sustainability issues in agricultural supply chains, especially on coffee in the Central Highlands region.
  • The Communication Manager will be based in Hanoi (preferably) or Ho Chi Minh city and will work in full -time manner under the personnel management of the IDH Vietnam Country Director.

What you bring

Candidates will be selected on the basis of key criteria:

  • Bachelor degree (Master degree is preferred) in Communications, Social studies or related field
  • Strong track record and background in communication/public relation, preferably in the non-profit sectors relevant to forest conservation, agriculture and rural development, land-use and natural resources management, supply chains.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Experience working in agriculture sectors, agri-businesses or iNGOs is an advantage
  • Excellent writing skills and proficient use of other skills (English and Vietnamese)
  • Fluent in Vietnamese and English
  • Demonstrated ability in team working.
  • Willing to travel within Vietnam, especially to the Central highlands.
  • Good facilitation and negotiation skills and an entrepreneurial mindset
