Bach Ma Bear Sanctuary Manager

In 2017, Animals Asia signed an agreement with the Vietnamese Government to bring bear bile farming to an end.  In early 2022, our new sanctuary in Bach Ma National Park will be ready to accept bears and are looking for someone with a passion for people and animals to join our team as a Sanctuary Manager.

With support from the expert staff at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao National Park, you will be responsible for the general day-to-day operations of Bach Ma Bear Sanctuary. You have advanced interpersonal skills and are experienced in leading, motivating and inspiring a large multi-disciplinary team. With an excellent work ethic, you are highly organised and embody Animals Asia’s brand values of empathy, courage, tenacity, and respect. Fluent in English and Vietnamese, you are an experienced communicator and comfortable speaking with guests, government authorities, and the media.

The Sanctuary Manager is a full-time, permanent position based in Bach Ma National Park. As part of your training and onboarding, you will spend 2-3 months based at Animals Asia’s Vietnamese Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao National Park. During your training, you will be expected to spend some time in our head office in Hanoi. Accommodation and transport will be provided to you during your training.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, monitor, and oversee all operations, persons and activities of the Bach Ma Bear Sanctuary.
  • Supervise all staff across the sanctuary, either directly or indirectly, through subordinate managers and supervisors.
  • Ensure sound financial stewardship and budget control for the sanctuary.
  • Prepare written, bilingual reports as required (weekly or monthly).
  • Assisting with major donors, government officers and officials on site.
  • Respond to requests for information to other departments, donors and supporters.
  • Work closely with other department heads to ensure effective sanctuary operations.
  • Promote Animals Asia’s work to the media and the general public.
  • Oversee health and safety at Bach Ma Bear Sanctuary and act as Emergency Response Coordinator during emergencies.

You will be asked to start in late November or early December 2021. You will be based at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao National Park for the first 2-3 months. After that, you will relocate to Bach Ma National Park, to our new bear rescue centre.

Requirements

  • This position is open to Vietnamese nationals only.
  • University graduate with at least five years of relevant work experience in an English speaking environment, 2 of which should be in managing a multi-disciplinary team.
  • An understanding of the bear bile industry in Vietnam and awareness of conservation and/or animal welfare issues generally and in Vietnam.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working in multicultural environments.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness.
  • Computer literacy, including the use of standard software such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.
  • Able to work in a flexible and timely manner, with availability outside of standard working hours when required.
  • Willing to live in Tam Dao National Park, Vinh Phuc Province (temporarily), and relocate permanently to Bach Ma National Park, Thua Thien Hue Province.
