Research Volunteer

Education for Development (EFD) believes that education improves the quality of life for disadvantaged children and youth. EFD strengthens and empowers local social organisations enabling them to improve and expand their educational services for disadvantaged children and youth. Through their development, disadvantaged children can gain fair and equal access to education and training thereby developing themselves to their full potential.

For the period January till April 2010 EFD is looking for a Research Volunteer to support us in conducting Strategic Research and Analysis as part of our Strategic Planning 2010.

Main responsibilities:
- Desk research and review of demographic statistics, economic indicators, government policies etc. related to education and the circumstances of disadvantaged children and youth in Vietnam.
- Stakeholder consultations; meetings and interviews with other INGOs and local authorities working in the field of education for disadvantaged children and youth.
- Needs survey; meetings and interviews with local social organisations providing education to disadvantaged children and youth.
- Analyses of all information gathered and drafting a final report. 

Required skills:
- Research and report writing experience
- Skills related to various types of data collection (interviewing, observation), data interpretation and analysis
- Excellent written and spoken English and preferably Vietnamese (EFD will provide translation/ interpreter if not)
- Strong ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
- Excellent computer skills in standard word processing

Background info:
The position would require the volunteer to work an average of two days in a week. Hours can be filled in flexible and the volunteer could do part of the assignment working from home. The position involves travelling within HCMC to visit counterparts. The volunteer will work closely with an EFD staff member that will participate in the meetings and the project visits and will be supporting the volunteer with translations (if needed), research and analysis. Regular meetings between the volunteer, EFD staff assigned and EFD Country Coordinator to discuss the research and its outcomes will be required and planned for. Costs for travelling to partners will be reimbursed by EFD.
