Brief organization description, including website

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is Part of One CGIAR and is the only center dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. The institute works through extensive partnership arrangements with research and development institutions in both the developed and developing parts of the world. ILRI’s research and development agenda covers a range of areas from laboratory-based biosciences to field-based research. Topics include animal productivity (health, genetics and feeds), food safety and zoonoses, livestock systems and the environment/climate change, gender and livelihoods, and policy and markets. Capacity development is an important part of the institute’s mandate and cuts across all its research and development areas.

In East and Southeast Asia region, ILRI has a representative regional office in Hanoi and focuses its research on food safety and zoonoses including climate sensitive diseases, environmental impact of livestock, and livestock value chain, market and policy and One Health. ilri.org

Potential Project(s) that the fellow will contribute to

  • One Health Initiative-Protecting Human Health through a One Health Approach
  • Improving human health through sustainable value chains in human-animal-environmental interactions using ICT in Vietnam (ICT4Health)
  • Safe PORK, food safety interventions and risk communication

Brief description of assignments

  • Support One Health field surveys: design, implementation, laboratory and field data analysis.
  • Support the development of outputs (brief and manuscript)
  • Support partners in conducting OH seminars

Natural science background (optional)

Vet, animal/environmental science, MD, public health background is preferred

Any other comments/suggestions from the hosting agency

  • ILRI prefers an assignment for the longest timeframe possible
  • ILRI may support additional training for the volunteer, if feasible and upcoming
