Communication and Media Coordinator Asia

We are looking for a Communication and Media Coordinator Asia - National position For a period of two years

Purpose of the Position

Provides strategic and technical leadership to Oxfam’s media and communications work in the region (using all platforms including digital and social media) ensuring delivery of high quality media coverage of Oxfam’s advocacy and campaigns, development and humanitarian work in Asia to support Oxfam’s public engagement including campaign and fundraising goals.

Main Tasks

  • Media and Communications
    • Design and implement a regional media strategy that secures high-impact media to help raise Oxfam’s profile, bring change on core Oxfam issues, and raise funds.
    • Support the development and delivery of a regional media and communications strategy in support of regional campaigns, mobilising and managing the engagement of the media in the delivery of campaign activities.
    • Working with campaign leads, strategize the use of digital strategies, enable Asia’s regional and national campaigns to increase its reach and influence towards achieving real changes.
    • Working with country media and communication leads, build the capacity and resources of the region to use digital strategies for engaging campaign supporters, including converting passive supporters into activists and individual donors to Oxfam.
    • Provide support or lead media and communications for Cat 1 or 2 emergencies in the region.
    • Identify, develop and maintain excellent relationships with key regional and national journalists and broadcasters from both traditional and interactive media based in the region.
    • Proactively look for stories suitable for media coverage from our work at regional level, working with country communications staffs to gather and publicise good stories from countries, and identifying uses for these stories elsewhere in Oxfam.
    • Be the primary point of contact for media in the region, facilitating and accompanying journalist visits in the region as relevant as well as managing negative stories about Oxfam in the region.
    • Build strong collaborative relationships with other Oxfam International, Affiliate and other Regional and country Communications and Media Officers and take lead responsibility for delivering media coverage of relevant international campaigns and advocacy materials in the region.
    • Monitor, evaluate and draw conclusions from all media coverage generated both directly and indirectly, making and implementing recommendations for improved impact.
    • Be a spokesperson for Oxfam and manage interviews with other spokespeople in the region, providing media training, coaching and support to all staff who may be expected to represent Oxfam in the media.
    • Lead the development of regional strategies to improve internal and external communications, including cross-programme and cross-country learning.
    • Ensure distribution of the regional communication bulletin; edit and distribute such in a timely manner via a variety of channels, including email, website, and social media.
    • Follow all procedures and guidelines for publication set forth in the Oxfam Branding Guide.
    • Ensure regular content for website and email list.
    • Develop and post regular content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
  • Media and Communications support
    • Work with Country Directors, campaign and advocacy leads, affiliate and OI media leads to develop and deliver media and communication strategies to increase the impact of country programmes, the work of partner organisations and regional campaigns.
    • Manage and coordinate Oxfam in Asia’s Community of Practice on media and digital communications (Oxfam Jazzhands) to ensure cross country collaboration, sharing of good practices and enable regionally coordinated media and communications work.
    • Support Oxfam’s partners to accompany them in getting media coverage for their advocacy and programme work where relevant.
    • Work with country programmes to build media and communications thinking in to all programme activities, identifying and generating regular, high quality media and communication stories and materials both to support media coverage and for internal and external communications using all relevant platforms.
    • Provide strategic media, social media and communications advice at the senior level in the region and nationally. This would include in the development of team plans, appropriate responses in the media and social media, brand risk and maximising impact of communications.
    • Work with the country teams to develop and implement a high-quality story-gathering strategy to showcase Oxfam’s work by generating compelling stories for use in media, social media, and wider communications including in support of fundraising and influencing objectives.
  • Management
    • Manage and coordinate fixed-term staff and/or consultant writers, online content producers, web designers and other short-term staff or consultants as needed.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Considerable experience of working in the media or in the public relations / communications fields at national, regional or international level with specific experience in Asia, demonstrated by a track record of success and achievement in media or communications work.
  • A drive to achieve results; a high level of personal energy and pro-activity, demonstrated by concrete examples of achievement and initiative taken in previous roles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, fluency in English essential, with the ability to communicate complicated issues in a clear way, often to short deadlines.
  • Ability to develop or customise stories for various audiences.
  • Ability to lead complex projects with national and regional scope.
  • Ability to conceptualise, design and deliver media, story-gathering and digital communication strategies.
  • Ability to use various social media platforms to support Oxfam’s campaigns and programmes.
  • Experience of working with digital/interactive media.
  • An understanding and experience of how to use media, communications, public campaigning and alliance-building to influence a political agenda.
  • Sound political judgment and sensitivity and knowledge of political and development issues facing Asia.
  • Excellent inter-personal, negotiation and networking confidence and skills and ability to influence others, internally and externally.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, including ability to find, absorb and prioritise information from many different sources, and proven experience of strategy development.
  • Ability to work in multi-national, multi-cultural teams and to develop good, effective and collaborative relationships.
  • Ability to capacity build and develop others through experience of training and accompaniment in media or communications.

Desirable

  • Experience of using a variety of communications tools to enhance internal and external communications for an organisation, including to improve knowledge management across a diverse international organisation.
  • Media training skills.
