US Provides $450,000 for Pandemic Preparedness

A US Embassy press release said the grant from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) will be used by the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VNRC) to develop a pandemic influenza preparedness and response plan and provide training for civil society organizations active in the country.
The civil society support activity complements government priorities and plans in pandemic influenza preparedness and response to minimize preventable deaths and illnesses, and lessen the impact of a potential pandemic, it said.

Swine Flu Hits Daily Record at 299

Since the first case of swine flu detected in May, 6,478 H1N1-positive cases have been recorded nationwide.
While 4,624 have fully recovered, seven have died, with the latest death reported on Thursday in the central city of Da Nang, according to the ministry. The others are being treated in hospitals in different parts of country.
In the meantime, the global pandemic’s death toll has reached 3,486, up 281 from a week ago, while 296,471 people in total have been detected with infection, the AFP quoted the World Health Organization (WHO) as saying on Friday.
That number, however, is seen as far below actual figures as some countries lack systematic data gathering, according to the WHO.

Australian Embassy’s 2009/2010 Direct Aid Program (DAP)

The Australian Embassy in Hanoi has launched a new small grants program: 2009/2010 Direct Aid Program (DAP) that will provide funding for small-scale development projects in Thua Thien Hue province and north. DAP grants are aimed at alleviating humanitarian hardship and advancing developmental outcomes in disadvantaged communities of Vietnam. The funding is available to individuals, community groups, international or Vietnamese NGOs, academic institutions and other non-profit organisations engaged in development activities in Vietnam.
