Vietnam Ranks 79th in UNESCO Educational Survey

Vietnam ranks 79th out of 129 countries in an educational survey conducted by UNESCO released in Hanoi Monday [November 3], the Thoi Bao Kinh The newspaper reported Wednesday.
The Education for All - Global Monitoring Report 2008, which constructs a comparative index on education development across 129 countries, said Vietnam has about one million dropouts.
The report found that the number of children starting primary schools has increased sharply since 2000; there are more girls in schools; and spending on education and aid has risen.
With the result, Vietnam may fail its education for all set-targets by 2015.

Vocational Training to be Stepped Up

The General Department for Vocational Training held a conference in Hanoi on October 4 to improve the quality and efficiency of vocational training centres across the country.
The government previously asked the General Department to raise the ratio of trained labourers to 50 percent by 2010 and 70 percent by 2015, provide vocational skills to one million rural labourers by 2009, and implement a project to assist young people in learning these skills in 2009-2015.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan requested all sectors to establish their own training programmes by 2009. The national vocational training system will also be expanded and upgraded in the near future.

International Volunteer Day - Ho Chi Minh City

International Volunteer Day provides an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to work together in projects and campaigns bringing added visibility to their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels.
In Ho Chi Minh City, Volunteers and Volunteer Sending and Involving Organizations are again coming together to organise activities to celebrate this important day and further promote the message of volunteerism and the work of volunteers in Vietnam. The main difference in this year’s event will be that volunteers are actively involved in planning, organizing and implementing the activities. This year, World AIDS Day and IVD will also be jointly observed on the 1st of December 2007.
