The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on May 5 handed over 40 safe houses to residents in Vietnam’s central province of Quang Ngai to support them to cope with climate change, state media reported. The houses were part of a joint project between the UNDP and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on improving the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities to the impact of climate change in Vietnam. The $29 million funded by the Green Climate Fund through the UNDP is expected to benefit 28 coastal localities in 2017-2020. This year, it is set to build in the province 302 flood-resistant houses for coastal residents this year and another 329 next year.
