Vietnam has successfully sent people from ethnic minority groups to work abroad, including demanding markets like Japan and South Korea. Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) Pham Thi Hai Chuyen made the statement at a conference held in Lao Cai province on January 19 to review the implementation of policies on labor export, vocational training and poverty reduction in poor districts. She revealed that the migrant workers have send money back home to help their families develop production and this has spurred local economic development. It was reported at the conference that last year north-west provinces provided vocational training for more than 243,000 people, over 13,000 of them came from impoverished families. The poverty rate in the region dipped by 3% to around 18.5%. These efforts have helped improve local people’s awareness on knowledge and skill training to access overseas labor markets. Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked local authorities to be more active in carrying out vocation training and poverty reduction policies and disseminate information to help people improve their awareness on labor exports.
