MINE AWARENESS EDUCATION
Title of Project: Prevent Injuries from Landmines and Unexploded Ordnance in Vietnam (MRE)  
Funding Agency: Office of Weapons Removal and Adbatement , Bureau of Political– Military Affairs, State Departement of America
Project Duration: August 2007 – July 2008 (possiblly expanded)
Project sites: Districts Nghi Loc and Thanh Chuong, Nghe An Province
Project objective: Reduce casualities and disabilities caused by landmines and
unexploded ordnance through the establishment of a focused landmine /UXO awareness education program in Nghe An province.

Approach
To achieve the objective, the project focuses on the following main approaches.

  • Build up local capacity in MRE by establishing local UXO/mine action management teams comprised of People’s Committee, Military Command, Youth Unions and provision of training, equipment and technical assistance.
  • Disseminate UXO/mine risk education awareness information via schools, local health clinics, community centers and media to people in Nghi Loc and Thanh Chuong districts, enabling school children to receive UXO/Landmine risk education.

Major activities

  • Establish a Project Management Unit at provincial level (PMU) and two education teams at district levels
  • Training/exposure trip for members of PMU and education teams to the Renew Project  of VVMF in Quang Tri  province
  • Training in baseline survey from members of PMU, education teams, and communal teachers/surveyor
  • Conduct baseline data  survey at the two districts to identify the level of awareness about mine risk in the two districts of the project
  • Training of trainers for educators / members of education teams, local media and PMU in Child-to-child MRE
  • Provision of equipments and materials for education teams
  • Production and broadcasting TV and radio spots on MRE
  • Conduct school educational programs
  • Organize town hall meetings/ community discussion
  • Conduct  integrated educational programs at villages
