Global Campaign for Education
Launched in 1999, the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is a movement of organisations and individuals all over the world who believe it is imperative that everyone has an education. It jointly campaigns and works together to promote the achievement of Education for All goals.
Vietnam joined GCE in 2003. The GCE coalition in Viet Nam consists of international and local organisations together with Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) have since organise event and activities in response to GCE’s Global Action Week in April annually. In 2008, millions of students, teachers, parents and politicians in 64 provinces throughout Vietnam joined with others in over 100 countries to lodge a Guiness Book of Records record for the World’s Biggest Lesson. This event was organised successfully through the cooperation of MOET and other members of the GCE coalition in Viet Nam, including ActionAid, Aide et Action, ChildFund, CRS, Oxfam, Plan, Save the Children (Sweden), UNESCO, UNICEF, NGORC, Viet Nam - Belgium Education Project, World Vision, and UCNEV.
In 2009, the GCE’s Action Week will be from 20-26 April with the theme The Big Read, as the campaign will focus on Literacy for All. Full campaign materials and information can be access from the GCE’s website http://www.campaignforeducation.org/en/big-read.
Focusing on the global message aiming to promote Youth and Adult Literacy and Lifelong learning, some initial ideas for activities in Viet Nam include working with MOET and provincial DOETs to coordinate this event at local levels with the participation of Non-formal Education Centres and schools.
Activities might include the development of local Big Read/dossier with stories of adult learners and illiteracy while a ‘reading festival’ may be the main event where local communities can join in.
Campaign materials, including Big Read posters, TV and Radio spots, Action Week documentary etc. will also be arranged. A national event may be organised at an ActionAid project site in Da Bac district (Hoa Binh/Ha Noi) with the participation of MOET and other relevant government officials, as well as the media, to show how adults here are supported to overcome illiteracy and poverty.
As the Big Read will promote reading ingeneral as well, GCE’s Action Week activities should be linked with World Book Day (23 April) so to involve national, local and school libraries and other stakeholders who celebrate World Book Day annually, e.g. the British Council.
Details of action plan will be discussed and finalised in the coming coalition planning meetings. The GCE’s coalition in Viet Nam would like to call for your organisation participation in this exciting Action Week to campaign for everyone to have a good quality basic education.
