Vietnam, Netherlands Hold Workshop on Sustainable Offshore Sand Mining

The Vietnam Geological Department, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management co-organized a workshop on sustainable offshore sand mining on March 19, local media reported.

At the event, the Dutch ministry’s representative said that the Netherlands will promote cooperation with Vietnam in the sustainable offshore sand mining field in the coming time. Dutch experts will exchange experience in sustainable offshore sand mining and support Vietnam in assessing and exploiting offshore sand resources in areas over 20 meters deep in water.

Currently, many transportation infrastructure projects in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta, lack sand sources to build road bases, so the Vietnamese government has demanded solutions to soon solve the problem.

However, Vietnam needs to complete and promulgate management regulations on exploration, exploitation, and use of sea sand and assess the impact of sea sand mining on the environment in accordance with international regulations. It is also necessary for the country to soon access technological solutions for offshore sand mining and sea sand washing.
