Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mekong Delta Starts Operations

A wastewater treatment plant, the largest of its kind in the Mekong delta, has been put into operation in Vietnam’s southern city of Can Tho. With a daily capacity of 6,000 cubic meters for the first phase, the plant that is located in Tra Noc Industrial Park will treat water discharged from surrounding companies. Construction of the first phase cost VND142 billion ($6.5 million) with 30% funded by the central government, 30% financed by the local government, 30% by Can Tho Investment and Development Fund, and 10% from Vietnam Environment Protection Fund. Vietnam, the country of 639 industrial clusters but only 42 or 6.5% is equipped with wastewater treatment systems. Statistics by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, there are nearly 240,000 cubic meters of untreated water directly discharged into the environment.
