France Continues Financing Climate Change Response Program in Vietnam

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a climate change adaptation project costing EUR52.3 million to be funded from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The financial support including EUR1 million worth of non-refundable aid will help raise climate resilience capacity in three localities, namely the southern city of Can Tho, the central province of Ha Tinh and the northern province of Ninh Binh. Of the beneficiaries, Can Tho will have the biggest receipt. The local authorities will use the funding to carry out a river embankment project, part of a dyke system for flood control in Can Tho city that will cost the local authorities multimillion dollar. AFD, together with other foreign organizations namely the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has funded total $1 billion for Vietnam’s climate change response programs since 2009.
